Seeking heavy light
Photography is about capturing light. It glances off objects, obscures them, makes them bold or dull. Light can change in an instant - as can a subject. The shadow cast by a branch in the wind, a cloud scudding across the sky, the continued tilting of the earth at sunset, the glint of an eye, the turn of a lip, the twitch of a muscle.
Light is why we are here. Without light there is no life - at least not as we know it. A planet’s surface would be as cold as outer space if there was no light shining upon it. Light is creator and presenter. And we are light capturing subjects.
Photography and living are very closely related. When I think about the role of photography in my own life, I often consider it like this: it helped me to capture light during some dark moments, it became something I loved to do, and now I’m a practicing photographer out of love and necessity.
My hope with this blog will be to explore these ideas - existential, metaphysical, practical. Thoughts on living a good life, and thoughts on taking good photos.
